The 6502 CPU is an 8-bit processor that was common in many computers and video game systems of the late 70s and early 80s. Even the Intellivision's primary competitor, the Atari 2600, used a 6502 variant (the 6507). Many web resources describe the 6502, such as http://www.6502.org/ .
